Constantly being prone to many predators like falcons, gulls, foxes, and birds of prey, plus threats from habitat loss, pollution, and climate change mean Sandpipers survive through safety.

They are known to select safe harbors away from dangers. The vigilant shorebirds have sensitive bills allowing quick foraging, leaving time to detect dangers, utilizing flocking confusing predators or darting and freezing in place for camouflage, then suddenly flying when startled. They even utilize leg movements to communicate danger to nearby members of the flock to signal danger or risk.
